How Our Journey
Started
Our story began with turkeys. Our founder Mark started small with just 12 Christmas turkeys grown the traditional way: free range and corn fed. This was intentionally the opposite of intensively reared poultry. This is what sparked our success.
Things take off
Soon the business became Traditional Norfolk Poultry (TNP) growing free range and organic chickens and organic chickens alongside turkey.
Hatching a plan
Following the success of the Norfolk Black Turkey, we set out to create the unique Norfolk Black Chicken. We wanted this new breed to be exceptional – and different. Black feathered with highlights of red and iconic black legs, a superb ranging bird. It had to have excellent conformation and be able to roam freely in its surroundings. Plus it needed to taste delicious.
We cracked it
Years of research and development went into making this breed the superior bird we’d envisioned. Finally, we got to the Norfolk Black Chicken as you know it today.

Not only is the Norfolk Black Chicken on the menu at respected restaurants, it was even selected to be served at a state banquet in 2025, showing it’s considered to be fit for a King.

Norfolk Black Chicken are incomparable to any ordinary free-range bird. This is not just because of their black feathers and excellent conformation, but because these exceptional birds are slow grown in small flocks.
Reared on family farms in Norfolk, this superior chicken enjoys a specially designed feed enhanced with corn and other grains. This helps the birds develop their unique flavour.
